History

1977 Belfast, Doug & June Elliott embarked on the journey of bringing the first design products to the city. Being on the periphery of Europe, and dealing with a  violent war with terrorism, it was a huge task.

The first showroom was opened in Brunswick street, with the help of every family member.

A mix of creativeness, youth, optimism, and investment in design furniture, with a soundtrack from Van Morrison, Dylan, and other period musicians made Batik a land mark of the city. A huge bomb destroyed the building.

1982 a revival, new showrooms, modernism, & post modernism. The design savvy longed for the return of Batik. The Victorian industrial buildings provided the perfect juxtaposition for the contrasting styles of batik's progressive objects. The first home was in Bedford street opposite the BBC, then onto a similar space on Adelaide Street.

The Gasworks Site provided the perfect opportunity to detach from the tradition of the city and begin a progression into true modernism. The flagship Gasworks building was purpose built to  provide the platform of showcasing the largest display of modern design in Ireland. The showroom was voted into the top 10 independent retail showrooms in Europe. Unfortunately the world's economy collapsed in 2008.
